Surah for Anxiety & Depression | Quranic Relief for Distress

Surah for Anxiety, Grief and Distress: Quranic Relief for a Heavy Heart

In short: For anxiety and grief the most directly relevant chapters are Surah Ash-Sharh, Surah Ad-Duha and Surah Ar-Ra’d, together with the supplication of Yunus in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:87) and the names Ya Salam and Ya Mujib. These passages address distress directly in the Quran’s own words rather than through later tradition.

A note on health. Spiritual practice supports treatment; it does not replace it. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah has not sent down a disease without sending down a cure for it, and he instructed his companions to seek treatment. If you are unwell — physically or mentally — please see a qualified doctor. Anyone who tells you to stop prescribed medication in favour of recitation is contradicting the sunnah, not following it.

This page gathers every chapter of the Quran and every name of Allah that the tradition connects to anxiety, grief, sadness, hardship and inner distress. Each entry carries an evidence label so you can see at a glance whether a benefit rests on authentic hadith, on classical scholarly usage, or on a narration whose chain is contested. We publish the grading rather than hiding it — a great deal of what circulates in this subject is presented with more confidence than the sources support.

The Five Most Recommended, in Depth

1. Surah Ash-Sharh (94)

Eight verses, and the two central ones are repeated for emphasis: indeed, with hardship comes ease (94:5–6). The repetition is the point — it is stated twice because the human heart does not accept it the first time. The surah was revealed to console the Prophet ﷺ personally during a period of difficulty, which is why it reads as address rather than instruction. Tier A, and the shortest complete answer to despair in the Quran.

2. Surah Ad-Duha (93)

Revealed after a pause in revelation, when the Prophet ﷺ was told by his detractors that he had been abandoned. The response: your Lord has not forsaken you, nor is He displeased (93:3). For anyone whose distress carries the specific flavour of feeling abandoned — by God, by people, by circumstance — this is the surah that names that feeling and answers it directly.

3. The Dua of Yunus (21:87)

La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu min az-zalimin. Spoken from inside the darkness, and the following verse states that Allah responded and saved him from distress — and that this is how believers are saved. It is short enough to hold onto in a panic and is among the best-authenticated relief supplications in the Quran.

4. Surah Ar-Ra’d (13)

Verse 28 is the diagnostic verse for anxiety: it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest. The Arabic tatma’innu carries the sense of settling, of an agitation coming to stillness. This is why sustained dhikr, rather than a single dramatic recitation, is the pattern the sources describe for a persistently unsettled heart.

5. Ya Salam & Ya Sabur (Names 5 & 99)

As-Salam is the Source of Peace — the name invoked when the disturbance is internal rather than external. As-Sabur, the Most Patient, is turned to when the difficulty is long rather than sharp: chronic illness, an unresolved situation, a wait with no visible end. Ya Mujib (the Responsive) belongs here too, for the specific fear that one’s prayers are going unheard.

How to Use This Properly

Everything on this page is a means — what the scholars call a sabab. A means is something Allah has made a cause of benefit. It is not a mechanism that compels an outcome, and the difference between those two ideas is the difference between worship and superstition.

Three conditions were set by the classical scholars for any recitation or written remedy to be permissible, and they are agreed upon across the schools:

  1. It must consist of the Quran, the names and attributes of Allah, or authentic supplication — nothing unknown, no symbols whose meaning cannot be read.
  2. It must be in Arabic or in language whose meaning is understood, so that nothing objectionable is being said unknowingly.
  3. The one reciting must believe the effect comes from Allah alone, and never from the words, the paper, the ink or the practitioner.

Alongside this, the Quran consistently pairs supplication with action. Surah Al-Jumu’ah tells the believers to seek provision after the prayer ends. Musa still had to face Pharaoh after asking for ease. Recitation that replaces effort, medical treatment or honest dealing contradicts the very texts being recited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which surah is best for anxiety and depression?

Surah Ash-Sharh and Surah Ad-Duha address distress most directly, and Surah Ar-Ra’d 28 explains why remembrance settles the heart. For acute moments, the supplication of Yunus (21:87) is short and well-authenticated.

Can Quranic recitation replace medical treatment for depression?

No. Depression and anxiety disorders are genuine medical conditions and the Prophet ﷺ instructed his companions to seek treatment. Spiritual practice is a complement to professional care, not a substitute for it. If you are struggling, please speak to a doctor or qualified mental health professional.

What should I recite when I cannot sleep from worry?

The three Quls, Ayat al-Kursi and the prophetic supplications before sleep are the established practice. Surah Al-Mulk is also commonly recited nightly. These are Tier A and part of the ordinary sunnah rather than special remedies.

Is my anxiety caused by the evil eye or by jinn?

It may be neither. Anxiety has well-documented medical, psychological and situational causes, and assuming a spiritual cause without ruling out the ordinary ones can delay treatment that would help. Where a spiritual dimension is genuinely suspected, ruqyah and medical care proceed together, not in place of one another.

How long before I feel relief?

The sources give no timeframe, and anyone who promises one is not being straight with you. What the texts describe is a change in how difficulty is carried, which is not the same as the difficulty ending.

Can I recite these for someone else who is suffering?

Yes. Reciting over another person and supplicating for them in their absence are both established practices, and the latter carries a specific narration that the angels ask the same for the one who prays.
