The Five Most Recommended, in Depth

1. Surah Al-Alaq (96)

The first revelation, and it opens with iqra — read. The first word given to an unlettered Prophet in a largely unlettered society was an instruction to read, and the passage goes on to mention the pen and what man did not know. For a student, no chapter carries more weight, and its position as the first thing revealed is itself the argument.

2. Surah Ta-Ha (20)

Two supplications from one chapter. Musa, sent to confront Pharaoh, prays: my Lord, expand for me my breast, ease for me my task, and untie the knot from my tongue that they may understand my speech (20:25–28) — the most complete supplication in the Quran for anyone facing an examination, an interview or a presentation. And at 20:114: my Lord, increase me in knowledge, the only thing in the Quran the Prophet ﷺ was commanded to ask for more of.

3. Surah Al-Asr (103)

Three verses. By time, mankind is in loss, except those who believe, do righteous deeds, advise one another to truth, and advise one another to patience. Ash-Shafi’i said that if nothing else had been revealed, this would have sufficed people. It is the Quran’s definition of a successful life, stated in under twenty words, and it corrects what most people mean by success.

4. Surah Al-Qamar (54)

Verse 17, repeated four times across the chapter: and We have certainly made the Quran easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember? The repetition of a verse about ease of memorisation is not accidental. It is the standard recitation of anyone beginning hifz or facing a memory-heavy course of study.

5. Ya Alim, Ya Fattah & Ya Hakim (Names 19, 18 & 46)

Al-Alim is the All-Knowing, the source of knowledge itself. Al-Fattah is the Opener — invoked when understanding will not come, when a subject stays closed. Al-Hakim is the All-Wise, concerning the right application of what is known, which is the difference between information and wisdom.

How to Use This Properly

Everything on this page is a means — what the scholars call a sabab. A means is something Allah has made a cause of benefit. It is not a mechanism that compels an outcome, and the difference between those two ideas is the difference between worship and superstition.

Three conditions were set by the classical scholars for any recitation or written remedy to be permissible, and they are agreed upon across the schools:

1. It must consist of the Quran, the names and attributes of Allah, or authentic supplication — nothing unknown, no symbols whose meaning cannot be read.
2. It must be in Arabic or in language whose meaning is understood, so that nothing objectionable is being said unknowingly.
3. The one reciting must believe the effect comes from Allah alone, and never from the words, the paper, the ink or the practitioner.

Alongside this, the Quran consistently pairs supplication with action. Surah Al-Jumu’ah tells the believers to seek provision after the prayer ends. Musa still had to face Pharaoh after asking for ease. Recitation that replaces effort, medical treatment or honest dealing contradicts the very texts being recited.

Which surah should I read before an exam?

Surah Ta-Ha 25–28, Musa’s supplication for expansion of the breast, ease of task and clarity of speech. It is the most directly applicable authenticated supplication for performance under pressure.

What is the dua for increasing knowledge?

Rabbi zidni ilma — my Lord, increase me in knowledge (20:114). It is the only increase the Prophet ﷺ was instructed in the Quran to seek.

Which surah helps with memory and memorisation?

Surah Al-Qamar 17 is most commonly recited, on the strength of its statement that the Quran has been made easy to remember. Note that no verse substitutes for method and repetition, and classical scholars of hifz were emphatic on that point.

Is there a surah for success in a job or career?

Surah Al-Jumu’ah 10 on seeking Allah’s bounty, Surah Al-Fath on divinely granted victory and the tranquillity that accompanies it, and Surah Al-Qasas 24, Musa’s supplication made while unemployed and destitute, which was answered with both work and marriage.

Does reciting a surah replace studying?

No. The Quran’s own first command is to read, and the supplication of Musa asks for ease of a task he still had to perform. Recitation without preparation contradicts the texts being recited.

What counts as beneficial knowledge?

The Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from knowledge that does not benefit, and the sources describe beneficial knowledge as that which changes conduct. Surah Al-Asr supplies the test: belief, right action, and calling others to truth and patience.
