Surah for Children and Fertility: Quranic Supplications for Offspring

The Five Most Recommended, in Depth

1. Surah Maryam (19)

Zakariya, old and with a wife unable to bear children, prays quietly: my Lord, my bones have weakened, my head has flared with grey, and never have I been unhappy in my supplication to You (19:4–6). He was answered with Yahya. This is the Quran’s fullest account of a prayer for a child, made after decades of asking, and it is the passage most recited by couples struggling to conceive.

2. Surah As-Saffat (37)

Verse 100: my Lord, grant me from among the righteous. Ibrahim’s request is four words long and specifies character rather than quantity or gender. It is the most concise fertility supplication in the Quran and among the most authentic.

3. Surah Al-Imran (3)

The supplication of Zakariya again at 3:38 — grant me from Yourself a good offspring — and, earlier, the vow of the wife of Imran over the child she was carrying (3:35). The surah is named for a family, and it is the natural chapter for parents rather than only for those still waiting.

4. Surah Luqman (31)

The other half of this hub: not asking for children, but raising them. Luqman’s advice to his son (31:13–19) covers tawheed, gratitude, prayer, patience, humility and even tone of voice. It is the Quran’s own parenting curriculum, and it is the chapter to give a parent who already has what they prayed for.

5. Ya Khaliq, Ya Bari & Ya Wahhab (Names 11, 12 & 16)

Al-Khaliq and Al-Bari concern the bringing into being of what did not exist. Al-Wahhab is the Giver of Gifts — the name used in Surah Al-Imran 38 in the very supplication for offspring, which is why it is paired with these two in fertility practice.

How to Use This Properly

Everything on this page is a means — what the scholars call a sabab. A means is something Allah has made a cause of benefit. It is not a mechanism that compels an outcome, and the difference between those two ideas is the difference between worship and superstition.

Three conditions were set by the classical scholars for any recitation or written remedy to be permissible, and they are agreed upon across the schools:

1. It must consist of the Quran, the names and attributes of Allah, or authentic supplication — nothing unknown, no symbols whose meaning cannot be read.
2. It must be in Arabic or in language whose meaning is understood, so that nothing objectionable is being said unknowingly.
3. The one reciting must believe the effect comes from Allah alone, and never from the words, the paper, the ink or the practitioner.

Alongside this, the Quran consistently pairs supplication with action. Surah Al-Jumu’ah tells the believers to seek provision after the prayer ends. Musa still had to face Pharaoh after asking for ease. Recitation that replaces effort, medical treatment or honest dealing contradicts the very texts being recited.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which surah should I read to have a baby?

Surah Maryam is the most commonly recited, on the strength of Zakariya’s supplication at 19:4–6. Surah As-Saffat 100 and Surah Al-Imran 38 are the two shortest authentic supplications for offspring.

Should I seek medical treatment for infertility?

Yes. Seeking treatment is consistent with the prophetic instruction to seek a cure, and fertility medicine has resolved a great many cases that supplication alone had not. The two are not in competition.

Is there a surah to have a son specifically?

No authentic source ties any chapter to the sex of a child. Surah Ash-Shura 49–50 states explicitly that Allah grants daughters to whom He wills and sons to whom He wills, which is a direct answer to this question in the Quran’s own words.

How long did Zakariya pray before he was answered?

The Quran indicates a very long period — he describes his bones as weakened and his hair as grey. The passage is preserved partly because the wait was long, which is the consolation it offers.

What can I recite during pregnancy?

There is no specific authenticated chapter for pregnancy. Surah Maryam is widely recited, and Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls form the ordinary daily protection any Muslim maintains.

What do I recite for a difficult or rebellious child?

Surah Luqman for the guidance itself, Surah Al-Furqan 74 for the supplication, and Surah Ibrahim 40 — my Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and from my descendants. Supplication for children is described in the sources as among the prayers that are answered.
