Importance of Tawheed in Islamic Healing: The Key to Valid Ruqyah
Tawheed (the Oneness of Allah) is the soul of Islamic worship—and the soul of valid ruqyah. Without correct belief, even technically correct ruqyah is unacceptable. This article explores why Tawheed is the key to valid Islamic healing.

📖 Tawheed: The Foundation of All Worship
Allah says: “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” (51:56). Worship (ibadah) must be purely for Allah. Ruqyah is a form of worship—therefore Tawheed is its essential condition.
🔑 Why Tawheed Matters for Ruqyah
- Ruqyah is ibadah — It is an act of worship seeking healing from Allah
- Allah is the Healer — “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me” (26:80)
- Shirk invalidates ibadah — “Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him” (4:48)
- Ruqyah without Tawheed is like prayer without facing Qiblah — Form without substance
⚖️ The Three Aspects of Tawheed Relevant to Healing
| Aspect | Definition | Relevance to Ruqyah |
|---|---|---|
| Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah | Worship is for Allah alone | Ruqyah must be to Allah alone; not to jinn, saints, or objects |
| Tawheed al-Asma wa al-Sifat | Allah’s Names and Attributes are unique | Ruqyah invokes Allah by His Names (e.g., Ash-Shafi — the Healer) |
| Tawheed al-Rububiyyah | Allah is the sole Creator and Sustainer | Healing comes from Allah’s permission, not the ruqyah itself |
🚫 Shirk in Ruqyah: How It Happens
- Invoking jinn or saints — Asking created beings to intercede or heal
- Believing the words/verses have independent power — Thinking the ruqyah works by itself, independent of Allah’s will
- Using non-Islamic mystical concepts — Fusing Qur’an with yoga, reiki, crystal healing, or New Age concepts
- Guaranteeing results — Claiming certain cure, which presumes knowledge of the unseen that belongs to Allah alone
“And those who take awliya’ besides Him — Allah is Watching over them, and you are not a guardian over them.” (42:6)
✅ What Makes Ruqyah Valid Islamically
- Sincerity (Ikhlas) — Intention is purely for Allah’s pleasure
- Qur’anic source — Based on Qur’an and authentic Sunnah
- Correct belief in Tawheed — Believing Allah is the Only Healer
- No shirk elements — No invocation of created beings
- Belief in Allah’s permission — Healing happens by Allah’s will, not the ruqyah’s own power
💡 Practical Implications for Muslims
- Before any ruqyah session, remind yourself: “I am asking Allah for healing, not the raqi, not the words themselves.”
- Use du’as that affirm Tawheed: “Ya Shafi” (O Healer), “Ya Rabb” (O Lord), “Allahumma-shfini” (O Allah, cure me)
- If a ruqyah practitioner makes you feel uneasy about shirk, trust your knowledge and seek another
- Self-ruqyah is the safest route for Tawheed compliance—you control the intention and source
