The Science of Distant Healing, Amazing Power of Intent
The Science of Distant Healing
The Science of Distant Healing is a very important subject. While there is much written about how our good intentions help others, a fundamental question remains: Can your good intentions really reach someone who is not physically present, and how do we know this?
In this article, we present current evidence discussing this phenomenon and provide explanations as to why distant healing has a legitimate place in modern scientific thinking.
Scientific Evidence: The 2008 Study
A well-designed study conducted in 2008 examined 36 couples to understand the impact of intention. In 22 of these couples, one of the two people was a cancer patient. The participants were divided into three distinct groups:
- The Trained Group (12 Couples): The healthy partner was trained to direct intention toward the patient and practiced this for three months prior to the experiment.
- The Wait Group (10 Couples): Couples where one partner had cancer, but the healthy partner had not yet received training.
- The Control Group (14 Couples): Healthy couples who received no training at all.
Methodology: Skin Conductance and The Autonomic Nervous System
Researchers measured Skin Conductance in both members of the couple. Skin conductance measures the ability of sweat to conduct electricity, which indicates activation of the autonomic nervous system.
The autonomic nervous system controls vital unconscious functions like heart rate, respiration, and body balance. When skin conductance changes, it proves this system has been activated.
The Experiment Setup:
- Partners were placed in distant shielded rooms for 30 minutes.
- The sender sent intention for 10-second periods followed by breaks.
- Skin conductance was measured during intention periods vs. break periods.
The hypothesis was simple: If skin conductance changed significantly when partners sent intentions, it would prove that intention impacts the nervous system across distance.
The Findings: Significance Beyond Chance
In research, if there is less than a 5% probability that a result is due to chance, it is regarded as probably true. This experiment produced remarkable results:
The probability that these findings were due to chance was 0.09%—well below the 5% threshold.
Every time intention was sent to partners in the shielded room, it created significant changes in skin conductance compared to the breaks. This occurred in all three groups, but the intensity varied:
- Greatest Effect: The Trained Group (Compassionate Intention Training).
- Intermediate Effect: The Wait Group.
- Least Effect: The Control Group.
This experiment demonstrated that intention can affect a partner’s body across distance outside of consciousness, and that training in compassionate intention amplifies this effect. Other studies have also shown distant healing can affect small-sized tumors.
Physics Underlying Intention
Within the scientific community, those who believe in distant healing do not view it as a "spooky" phenomenon. There are four principles of physics underlying intention described in the literature:
Why Results Vary
The effects of distant healing have not been uniform. While some studies show success, others (like those on chronic fatigue syndrome or HIV) have been inconclusive. Why is healing not always effective?
- Quality of Intention: The focus or purity of the intention may not be high enough.
- Capacity of Intender: Different individuals have different inherent capacities for sending intention.
- Severity of Illness: Different illnesses may require significantly higher levels of intention energy.
- Disruptive Intentions: External intentions or skepticism may disrupt the intention being measured.
However, the data we have illustrates that there is definitely the possibility that the effect can be felt. It is just not ubiquitous or uniform.
The Role of Faith and Expectation
I would caution against believing that all people are equally able to perform distant healing. However, where there is expectation and faith, the chances of success are higher.
In fact, in the study that showed distant healing had no effect on chronic fatigue, the expectation that one would get better did have an effect. This implies that intention works best when we believe in our own capacities to heal and improve.
