Al-Hayy is distinguished from Al-Qayyum (The Self-Subsisting): Al-Hayy affirms the Divine Essence’s own eternal, perfect life — the source of all attributes of perfection (knowledge, power, will, hearing, sight). Al-Qayyum affirms that this Living One sustains every other existence moment by moment. Al-Hayy is the fountain; Al-Qayyum is the river that never ceases to flow from it.
