Meaning & the Arabic Root

The root ḥ-q-q (حق) carries the core senses of truth, reality, right, what is established, what is due, and what is necessary. Morphologically al-Ḥaqq is an active participle (ism fāʿil) on the pattern faʿīl, indicating a permanent, intrinsic attribute: He is the Truth, not merely One who speaks truth.

Classical lexicons (e.g. Lisān al-ʿArab) note that ḥaqq is the antonym of bāṭil (falsehood/vanity). As a Divine Name it affirms that Allah’s Essence, Attributes, Speech, Promise, and Threat are all ḥaqq — necessarily existent, unchanging, and the ground of all derivative realities.

Distinction from related Names: al-Mubīn (the Clear/Manifest) denotes clarity of evidence; al-Ḥaqq denotes ontological truth. Aṣ-Ṣādiq (the Truthful) describes His Speech; al-Ḥaqq describes His very Being. The Name therefore gathers epistemological certainty and metaphysical necessity.

Al-Haqq in the Quran

Quran

Al-Haqq occurs as a Divine Name with the definite article (al-Ḥaqq) in at least four Qurʾanic verses: Sūrat al-Ḥajj 22:62, Sūrat Luqmān 31:30, Sūrat al-Muʾminūn 23:116, and Sūrat al-Anʿām 6:62. The root ḥ-q-q appears over 200 times in verbal and nominal forms throughout the Qurʾan.

Surah al-Hajj 22:62

Dhālika bi-anna Llāha huwa al-Ḥaqqu wa-anna mā yadʿūna min dūnihi al-bāṭilu wa-anna Llāha huwa al-ʿAliyyu al-Kabīr

“That is because Allah — He is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood, and Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.”

Surah al-Hajj 22:62

The verse juxtaposes al-Ḥaqq (the True/Real) with al-bāṭil (the false/void), establishing the Name as the ontological criterion: whatever partakes of Him partakes of reality; whatever turns from Him dissolves into unreality.

Surah Luqman 31:30

Dhālika bi-anna Llāha huwa al-Ḥaqqu wa-anna mā yadʿūna min dūnihi al-bāṭilu wa-anna Llāhu huwa al-ʿAliyyu al-Kabīr

“That is because Allah — He is the Truth, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood, and Allah is the Most High, the Most Great.”

Surah Luqman 31:30

Identical wording to 22:62, reinforcing the Name as a Qurʾanic refrain. The context (creation, rain, ships at sea) shows al-Ḥaqq as the sustaining Reality behind every phenomenon.

Surah al-Mu'minun 23:116

فَتَعَالَى اللَّهُ الْمَلِكُ الْحَقُّ ۗ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ
Fa-taʿālā Llāhu al-Maliku al-Ḥaqqu lā ilāha illā huwa Rabb al-ʿArshi al-Karīm

“So exalted is Allah, the True King; there is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne.”

Surah al-Mu'minun 23:116

The only verse coupling al-Malik and al-Ḥaqq with the definite article. Sovereignty (mulk) and truth (ḥaqq) are inseparable: true kingship belongs only to the One whose existence is necessary.

The Hadith Foundation of the 99 Names

Hadith — graded

Abū Hurayrah radiyallāhu ʿanhu reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever enumerates them enters Paradise.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2736; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2677

The above «umbrella» ḥadīth is the primary authentication for the set of ninety-nine Names, including al-Ḥaqq. The itemised list in Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 3507 names al-Ḥaqq explicitly, but scholars grade that particular list ḍaʿīf (weak) due to its isnād; the Names themselves are established by Qurʾan and authentic Sunnah individually.

No additional ṣaḥīḥ Name-specific ḥadīth for «Yā Ḥaqq» is established with a definite collection-and-number reference; the Name is invoked in general duʿāʾ narrations (e.g. «Allāhumma anta al-Ḥaqq…» in the night prayer) recorded in the Ṣaḥīḥayn without a separate enumeration number.

Classical Commentary

Classical Scholarship — Sunni / Sufi tradition

Imam al-Ghazālī (al-Maqṣad al-Asnā)

Al-Ghazālī explains that al-Ḥaqq signifies the One whose existence is necessary in itself (wājib al-wujūd bi-dhātihi), unlike every created thing whose existence is contingent and borrowed. He is the Truth in three senses: (1) His Essence is true — not non-existent, not impossible, not contingent; (2) His Attributes are true — perfectly matching His Essence; (3) His acts and words are true — creation, revelation, promise, and threat all conform to wisdom and justice. To know Him as al-Ḥaqq is to realise that all else is bāṭil by comparison, a fleeting shadow.

Ibn ʿArabī and the Akbarian Tradition

In the school of Ibn ʿArabī, al-Ḥaqq (the Real) and al-Khalq (creation) are the two poles of manifestation. The Real is the One Entity (al-Aḥadiyya) which discloses Itself in infinite forms while remaining undiminished. The seeker’s path is fanāʾ fī al-Ḥaqq (annihilation in the Real) — not ontological union, but the realisation that “there is no existent but He” (lā mawjūda illā Huwa). His writings on the Divine Names treat al-Ḥaqq as the comprehensive Name that contains all others.

Benefits of Reciting Ya Haqqu

Within the devotional tradition, the following benefits are associated with the sincere and consistent remembrance of Al-Haqq. Each reflects the meaning of the Name itself.

  • Guidance to truth (hidāya)
Because He is the Truth, invoking Yā Ḥaqq is the tradition’s means to ask for discernment between ḥaqq and bāṭil in decisions, relationships, and inner states.
  • Strengthening conviction (yaqīn)
The Name’s meaning — necessary, unchanging Reality — is recited to anchor the heart against doubt, waswasa, and the fluctuating nature of dunyā.
  • Clarity in confusion
When matters are entangled, the tradition records recitation of Yā Ḥaqq to seek the clarity that comes from the One called al-Ḥaqq.
  • Justice and righting wrongs
Since ḥaqq also means “right” and “due”, the Name is invoked by the oppressed and by judges seeking to uphold justice alongside lawful means.
  • Healing from spiritual falsehood
Recited for healing (alongside medical treatment) from ailments rooted in illusion, delusion, or chronic despair — states the tradition associates with bāṭil.
  • Steadfastness on the path
The Sufi silsilas teach that constant remembrance of al-Ḥaqq aligns the servant’s will with the Real, granting thabāt (firmness) in worship and character.
  • Acceptance of duʿāʾ
Opening supplication with Yā Ḥaqq (or the Qurʾanic “Rabbana anta al-Ḥaqq…”) is believed to bring the duʿāʾ into conformity with the Divine Reality, increasing likelihood of acceptance.

Traditional Wazifa Practices (with Sources)

Devotional Tradition — South Asian wazifa literature

The following practices are drawn from the South Asian Urdu wazifa manual genre (e.g. Ism-e-Aʿẓam by ʿĀlam Faqrī) and the living instruction of Sufi silsilas. They are devotional traditions, not ḥadīth-prescribed formulas. No specific outcome is guaranteed; they are offered as means of seeking Allah by His Beautiful Name. Fixed-duration practices (chillas, counts above ~500) are traditionally undertaken with a qualified teacher’s guidance. Recitation accompanies — never replaces — medical or professional care.

  • Qurʾanic duʿāʾ practice (after each farḍ ṣalāh)
Recite the Qurʾanic invocation: “Rabbanā anta al-Ḥaqqu wa-waʿduka al-ḥaqqu wa-liqāʾuka al-ḥaqqu…” (Our Lord, You are the Truth, Your promise is true, meeting You is true… — adapted from Bukhārī 7384, Muslim 771) three times, then ask for your need. This grounds the wazifa in revealed text.
  • Daily wird (100×)
Recite Yā Ḥaqq 100 times after Ṣalāt al-Fajr or ʿIshāʾ with wuḍūʾ, facing qibla, imagining the light of truth permeating the heart. Consistency over weeks is emphasised more than a single high count.
  • For guidance in a specific matter (300×)
After Ṣalāt al-Ḥāja (two rakʿat for need), recite Yā Ḥaqq 300 times, then make duʿāʾ for clarity. The tradition suggests repeating for 3, 7, or 11 consecutive days while remaining open to counsel and istikhāra.
  • Forty-day chilla (1000× daily)
A 40-day retreat-style practice: 1000× Yā Ḥaqq daily (divided into four sittings of 250), with fasting on Mondays/Thursdays if possible, minimal speech, and a teacher’s oversight. Undertaken only with permission and for deepening yaqīn, not for worldly gain.

Etiquette (Adab) of Reciting Ya Haqqu

  • Begin with istighfar — seeking forgiveness before presenting the request.
  • Praise Allah and send salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ before and after the dhikr.
  • Be in wudu and face the qiblah where possible — recommended, not obligatory, for dhikr.
  • Ask with certainty — the Prophet ﷺ instructed asking Allah with conviction of response (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 3479).
  • Keep lawful earnings and intentions.
  • Consistency over quantity — the most beloved deeds are the most constant, even if small (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464).
  • Recite with the inward certainty (yaqīn) that He alone is the Real; avoid using the Name as a magical formula for selfish ends.
