Dua for Grief, Sudden Loss & Calamities (Umm Salamah Hadith)

✓ E-E-A-T Verified·Last Updated: November 1, 2026·Reviewed by Sheikh Sayed Shah Qadri
Summary:

During grief or unexpected hardship, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the prayer: 'Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn, Allāhumma'-jurnī fī muṣībatī wa akhlif lī khayram-minhā' (Sahih Muslim 918). Allah promises to reward the sufferer and replace the loss with something far greater.

Recitation Protocol (11x Durood Awwal & Aakhir):It is traditional practice to recite 11 times Durood Shareef (Salawat) before and after supplications. Sayyiduna Umar (RA) noted that supplication is suspended between heaven and earth until blessings are sent upon the Prophet ﷺ (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi 486).
Innā lillāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn, Allāhumma'-jurnī fī muṣībatī wa akhlif lī khayram-minhā.
“Indeed to Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it with something better for me. (Sahih Muslim 918)”
Sahih Muslim 918
