Among established East End and outer-borough families, much of what people describe sits around the extended family — biraderi expectation, marriage disputes that cross the British-born and back-home divide, and the quiet fear of second-generation children drifting from the deen. In a city this expensive, debt and the weight of riba press hard, and it is common to feel that rizq is stuck. Others, isolated in high-rise developments, describe a loneliness — and with it the whispering doubt (waswasa) that grows in solitude. And envy (hasad) and the evil eye (ayn) are felt across all of it, wherever people live closely and compare.
