What the Surah Is About

Revealed in Makkah, Surah Al-Falaq shifts the believer’s gaze from the Source of all good (Surah Al-Ikhlas) to the reality of created harm. Its five verses move logically:

  1. Verse 1: The refuge — قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ الْفَلَقِ — anchoring protection in the One who splits the dawn, dispersing darkness.
  2. Verse 2: General evil — مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ — covering every harmful potential within creation.
  3. Verse 3: The evil of darkness — وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ — the night’s concealment of physical and spiritual threats.
  4. Verse 4: The evil of sorcery — وَمِن شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ — those who practice sihr by blowing on knots.
  5. Verse 5: The evil of the envier — وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ — the destructive force of hasad when acted upon.

Classical exegetes (e.g., Ibn Kathir, Al-Qurtubi) note that the surah does not merely list dangers; it reorients the heart toward tawhid — harm has no independent power; all power belongs to the Lord of the Daybreak.

  • No seeker of refuge used anything like them. The Prophet ﷺ said: “No one seeks refuge with anything like these two [Al-Falaq and An-Nas].” — Sahih Muslim 814 [VERIFY]
  • They replaced earlier refuges from jinn and the evil eye. “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge from the jinn and the evil eye of men until the Mu‘awwidhatayn were revealed; then he took to them and left everything else.” — Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2058 [VERIFY] (graded hasan sahih by Al-Albani)

  • Used in the Prophet’s ﷺ final illness (Ruqyah). ‘A’ishah (رضي الله عنها) reported: “When the Prophet ﷺ fell ill, he would recite the Mu‘awwidhatayn over himself and blow [lightly into his hands, then wipe his body]. When his pain intensified, I would recite them over him and wipe his hand over him for its blessing.” — Sahih al-Bukhari 5016 [VERIFY]

The authentic Sunnah is sufficient: morning/evening 3×, nightly wiping, and sincere Ruqyah with certainty (yaqin) in Allah alone.
