Salatul Kusuf (also spelled Salatul Kusoof) is a Sunnah Prayer offered during a solar or lunar eclipse. It is a confirmed Sunnah (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) according to the consensus of Islamic scholars, and some even consider it Wajib (obligatory) due to the strong emphasis placed upon it by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

We Muslims recognize that everything is created and sustained by the Lord of the universe, Allah Almighty. The sun and the moon are two signs from Allah, and they do not become eclipsed for the death or the birth of anyone. Salat al-Kusuf is a confirmed Sunnah according to the consensus of the scholars.

If we read the Holy Quran, it encourages us to look around, observe, and reflect on the beauties and wonders of the natural world as signs of Allah’s majesty. Various verses (ayat) of the Quran serve as reminders about this cosmic order…

﴿ وَهُوَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ ٱلَّيۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَ وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ كُلّٞ فِى فَلَكٖ يَسۡبَحُونَ ﴾
“And (Allah) is He Who created the night and the day, and (also) the sun and the moon. All (heavenly bodies) are continually floating fast in their respective orbits.” — (Quran 21:33)

﴿ ٱلشَّمۡسُ وَٱلۡقَمَرُ بِحُسۡبَانٖ ﴾
“The sun and the moon are rotating according to the configuration determined (by Him).” — (Quran 55:05)

The Quran has many verses which guide us about the planetary movements of the sun and moon. If we see, the timing of the five daily Salah is calculated based on the Moon & Sun movement — we cannot ignore this aspect of life. Even Eid Day celebrations depend on the visibility of the new moon.

There are many times when a lunar eclipse or solar eclipse occurs due to the movement of planets. During a solar or lunar eclipse, our Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ told us to increase our Ibadah (worship), and it is Wajib to pray the Salat al-Khusuf… Yes, it is a Wajib Salah to be offered whenever there is either a solar or lunar eclipse.

⚠️ Important Precautions During an Eclipse

Things You Should Not Do During the Eclipse:

Pregnant Ladies must take extra care — don’t go outdoors and take full precaution during the eclipse period.
Don’t start any new business or work during this time — it may affect your financial situation and barakah.
Don’t travel during the eclipse window unless absolutely necessary.
Control your emotions — since the moon has a direct impact on the mind, be mindful and stay calm.

🌘 Eclipses Are Signs from Allah

Eclipses are signs from Allah by means of which Allah makes His slaves afraid. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And We sent not the signs except to warn, and to make them afraid (of destruction).” — (Quran 17:59 — Surah Al-Isra)

Salatul Kusoof must be offered by all. It is a collective responsibility and a powerful act of worship that reaffirms our submission to the Creator of the cosmos.

📜 Hadith Evidence for Salatul Kusuf

Imam al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated that Ibn Mas’ud al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The sun was eclipsed the day Ibrahim, the son of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, and the people said, ‘The sun is eclipsed because of the death of Ibrahim.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
‘The sun and the moon are two signs from Allah, and they do not become eclipsed for the death or the birth of anyone. If you see that, hasten to remember Allah and to pray.’“
— (Sahih al-Bukhari & Sahih Muslim)

This powerful hadith clarifies that eclipses are not omens of human events — they are cosmic signs from Allah meant to turn us back to Him in worship, humility, and repentance.

🕌 How to Perform Salatul Kusoof / Salatul Kusuf

The eclipse prayer consists of two rakahs, and each rakah has two recitations (Qiyam) and two bowings (Ruku). This distinguishes it from all other prayers. Follow the steps below carefully:

Step 1 – Ensure Purity & Make Wudhu
Before offering the Salah, one must ensure taharah — purity of the body, the clothes, and the place. Make Wudhu (ablution) properly.

Step 2 – Face the Qiblah
Stand facing the Qiblah (direction of the Ka’bah in Makkah).

Step 3 – Make the Intention (Niyyah)
Make the intention in your heart that you are praying Salatul Kusoof for the sake of Allah.

Step 4 – Pronounce the Takbir Tahreema
Raise your hands and say “Allahu Akbar” to begin the prayer.

Step 5 – First Qiyam (Recitation)
Recite Surah al-Fatihah and then a Surah — preferably a long Surah (such as Al-Baqarah or similar in length).

Step 6 – First Long Ruku
Perform a long Ruku (bowing). Prolong the tasbeeh in this position.

Step 7 – Rise from Ruku & Second Recitation
Rise from Ruku saying “Samee Allahu Liman Hamidah, Rabbanaa walakal Hamd.” Then recite Surah al-Fatihah again and then a Surah — preferably a long Surah but shorter than the one recited before.

Step 8 – Second Long Ruku
Go for the second Ruku. This Ruku must be long but shorter than the first one.

Step 9 – Rise & Perform Two Long Sajdahs
Rise from the second Ruku saying “Sami’Allahu Liman Hamidah, Rabbanaa walakal Hamd.” Then perform two Sajdahs, one after the other as in normal Salah — but each sajdah must be of lengthy duration.

Step 10 – Complete the Second Rakah
One Rakah is now complete. Get up and perform the second Rakah following the exact same procedure as the first Rakah (two recitations, two rukus, and two long sajdahs).

Step 11 – Tashahhud & Tasleem
After performing the two sajdahs of the second rakah, sit for the Tashahhud and end the Salah with Tasleem — saying “Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah” first on the right, and then on the left.

📿 After the Prayer – Dhikr, Du’a & Charity

After completing Salatul Kusuf, increase in the following acts of worship:

Tasbeeh — SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)
Tahleel — La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah)
Tahmeed — Alhamdulillah (All praise belongs to Allah)
Istighfar — Seek abundant forgiveness from Allah
Sadaqah — Give charity generously
Du’a — Make lots of heartfelt supplications
